Rukufanu / Rukufanthi work

Coconut thatch was widely used in the building of the traditional Maldivian house. Fungi, panels of plaited palm fronds, often just in itself is traditionally used for fences, walls and roofing.
In modern times this has been adapted to more ornamental uses such as decorating the exteriors and interiors of buildings, etc.

The modern Maldivian craftsman has adopted this art to create souvenirs that are a testament to Maldivian tradition, yet quite suited to today’s needs.
